The missing button

SproutVideo gives viewers no way to download. That only matters once you lose your connection, your signal gets unreliable, or a course creator moves to another platform and your access disappears overnight. SproutVideo Downloader adds the button the player lacks, so videos made for training, onboarding, marketing or delivery to clients can be archived before access changes or runs out.

Where it finds players

  • sproutvideo.com itself
  • vids.io share links
  • any third-party page with an embedded SproutVideo player, for example a course platform, an internal or private portal, a docs site or a page for delivering work to clients

A page with several embedded players is no problem: each one shows up in the popup, and you choose the exact video you need. Players from other video hosts are not supported.

What happens behind the button

Detected players get a download button injected into them, so you start without leaving the page. The extension decodes the player's base64 data and script-level metadata to show the title, poster, duration and available formats. If a direct MP4 source exists, it downloads that. If not, it falls back to authenticated HLS: it signs each request with SproutVideo's policy tokens, which lets protected manifests and segments load properly, then assembles them into MP4 in your browser. You never have to extract signed URLs by hand, and you do not need ffmpeg or any desktop software.

The quality selector shows every format found in the player data and HLS manifests, highest resolution first, typically reaching 1080p, or above where the source allows. For password-protected videos, type the same password the player asks for into the field in the popup.

Using it

Activation is an email confirmation using a one-time password. After that, the starting point is any loaded SproutVideo player, whichever of the places above it lives on. Use the injected button or the toolbar popup, supply the password if the video has one, and choose a quality. The in-browser download manager then reports segment progress, speed and completion, which is most useful on longer videos. A direct MP4 is saved straight away, while an HLS stream is first put together into an MP4.

Requirements and limits

Runs on Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave, Opera, Whale and Yandex, on Windows, macOS and Linux. It isn't available for Safari, and the same goes for browsers on phones and other mobile devices. Region: Worldwide.

  • Detection waits until the SproutVideo player has finished loading.
  • A protected video needs its correct password.
  • Available qualities depend on the source.
  • Embeds that load lazily may need you to scroll to them or refresh the page.
  • DRM-protected content outside the supported workflows cannot be saved, and neither can videos you have no permission to access.

Privacy and permissions

Finding videos, handling streams and producing the MP4 happen entirely on your device; no video data goes through outside servers. Remote requests are limited to activating and verifying your access and checking for updates.

  • downloads: writes each finished MP4 to disk and keeps track of how far every download has got.
  • activeTab: locates SproutVideo players in the current tab and adds download controls to them.
  • storage: keeps activation state and your preferences between sessions.
  • notifications: lets you know when a download finishes or runs into an error.
  • scripting: pulls player data, unpacks metadata and prepares the signed HLS requests.

FAQ

I can see a SproutVideo player right now. What next?

Give it a moment to load completely. Then either the injected button on the player or the toolbar icon opens the format list; choose one and an MP4 is written to your computer.

My course lives on a third-party site. Will its SproutVideo embeds be found?

Yes. Spotting embeds on other people's sites is central to how it works, whether that is a course platform, a private portal, a documentation page or a client delivery page.

The video asks for a password. Can I still save it?

Yes, as long as you know it. The popup has a password field; enter what the player itself asks for and the download proceeds as normal.

How high does the quality go?

The list is built from the player data and the HLS manifests and starts with the sharpest option. On many videos that means 1080p or more, with smaller sizes beneath, though the source decides.

Will I always get an MP4?

Yes. A direct source is fetched immediately; an authenticated HLS stream is stitched together into an MP4 in the browser first.

A page has several SproutVideo embeds. How do I choose?

Open the popup: it shows each embed detected on the page, and you click the one you are after.

Is ffmpeg or a desktop program required?

Nothing outside the browser is involved. Finding streams, processing HLS, running the queue and building the MP4 are all handled by the extension itself.

Can I install it in Opera, Whale or Yandex?

Yes, those work, as do Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Brave, on Windows, macOS or Linux. It will not run in Safari or on a phone or tablet.

The extension is not picking up my video. Any tips?

Wait until the SproutVideo player has loaded completely before opening the popup. Some embeds wait until they are scrolled into view; scroll down to it, or reload, so its player initialises.

What leaves my computer while I use it?

Only requests to activate and verify your access, and to check for updates. Detection, stream handling and MP4 creation run locally in your browser.
