How the format list is built

Generic downloaders tend to guess. This extension asks Dailymotion's player metadata API which formats exist for the video, which gives a more dependable list. If the metadata is not enough, it reads the HLS master playlist and expands the variant streams inside it.

Qualities are listed by resolution, typically some mix of 1080p, 720p, 480p and 360p, or lower, depending on how the video was uploaded. The popup also shows the title, thumbnail, duration and how many formats were detected.

Producing the MP4

When a direct MP4 source is available it downloads straight away. When playback relies on HLS playlists, the segments are stitched into a single MP4 on your computer before the job completes, which is how longer videos are handled. Either way the result is a standard MP4, saved automatically to Downloads/Dailymotion with no save dialog, and a desktop notification tells you whether it succeeded or failed.

Only one download runs at a time. Keeping a single active job keeps detecting the format, handling HLS and building the file stable, so there is no multi-download queue.

Permissions

• downloads: saves finished MP4 files locally and keeps the browser's download state consistent with what the extension shows.
• activeTab: limits scanning to whichever Dailymotion tab is currently open.

Detection, playlist handling and MP4 creation all happen in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Network traffic is confined to activating the extension, looking for updates and querying Dailymotion's metadata for a video you can already open.

Where it does not apply

• Live streams on Dailymotion are not supported.
• Players embedded on other sites are not handled directly; open the original Dailymotion page and download from there.
